A Carnival of Animals and Children

This lesson is designed to teach positional, directional and spatial skills, social skills, large motor skills, creative skills, and oral vocabulary using the "Aquarium" movement from Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint- Saëns. The lesson is designed specifically to teach early childhood developmentally delayed students but can the challenge can easily be increased to make it appropriate for older grades or ELL classes.

Communication: Learning the Basics through Music

This lesson introduces basic communication skills by asking the following questions: What does communication mean? What do good communicators do? Selections from Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copland and Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns will help us define musical terms and discover the answers to our questions. Following this lesson, students will have a better understanding of the definition of communication and the different aspects included in the definition.

Communities: Orchestral Communities, Personal Communities

Students will be able to relate the similarities and differences experienced by orchestra members and students of a first grade class as connected to the idea of the interdependence within a community. They will recognize that as members of a classroom community there are expectations for jobs, behavior, and intrinsic motivation to function to the best of the individual's ability.

Grieg and Chopin: Day and Night

This integrated lesson uses Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46, first movement "Morning Mood," and Frederick Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 9, No. 2, to study day and night. As part of our science curriculum, we read and learned about day and night; routines at home and at school for day and night; and what animals are awake and asleep in the day and night.

Peter and the Wolf with Puppetry

This is a simplified version of Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf taught in a developmental delay program for special needs students and English language learners, ages 3 to 6 years. It is easily adapted to meet the needs of older children with the same educational needs. The purpose of the lesson is to provide the students with a variety of experiences performing and telling the story of the fable that Sergei Prokofiev has set to music, and to introduce the students to various instruments of the orchestra.

It's Spring, Mr. Vivaldi!

This lesson plan was developed for three- to five-year old developmentally delayed students. It is a very simplified study of the three movements of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons: Spring. The three movements demonstrate the tempos of allegro and largo, and provide  opportunity for children to move in dance and play rhythm instruments to the music and the words of Vivaldi's sonnets. Varied art activities, nature walks and children's literature about spring and the weather are an integral part of the lesson.

Music through the Ears of Beethoven

Using Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, students will discover how difficult it is to compose music with a hearing loss. Children will develop an understanding of overcoming disabilities and preserving through life's struggles. Students will learn how to compose four bars of music using 4-4 time.

Stravinsky: Our Words, Our Vision

Students will engage with the music of Igor Stravinsky and write a cinquain poem to express their interpretation. Students will use different art mediums to draw their vision of his music.
