Understanding Fractions Through Music

Students understand the relationships between whole, halves, and quarters, and internalize the relationships between the parts through interaction with musical notation and rhythm.  Additionally, students will apply abstract thinking skills to process, read and create musical notations and compositions using their knowledge of fractions.

Sounds of Music

Can we hear the sounds of music?  Students will predict how well they think they can detect the dynamics of music by well known composers.  Through scientific inquiry, students will create an entry for the science fair which compares predictions with data collected by a Quacker Tracker while their musical selection is played.

Star Spangled Music as a Patriotic Symbol

Through the use of music, students will make connections with the historical events in Colonial America and Europe during the early 19th century.  Using the music of Sousa and Tchaikovsky, students will understand how music can become a patriotic symbol and help depict historical events.

War of 1812

Students deepen their understanding of the political and emotional events of the War of 1812 through the music of Tchaikovsky.  Students will learn how different instruments are used for expressing a mood and illustrating events in history.  Students will write a response to the music that informs about their own understanding of both the instrumentation and the important events of history.

Conociendo a un gran compositor (Meeting a Great Composer)

Through this lesson students have the opportunity to research a classical composer of their choosing. This lesson involves the use of different skills such as: reading, translation, writing, and speaking in Spanish. Furthermore, students will be able to analyze their composer's life, and present feedback and insight on what they have learned.

FDR's New Deal Programs

Franklin Roosevelt introduced The New Deal to boost the economy that was shattered by the Wall Street Crash. Students will research the acts and agencies that were to help restore prosperity through expansive government intervention in the economy. Music integration will be in the following components: classical music for the video, poster of the biography of the composer and why he wrote the piece; and analysis of why students choose the classical piece for their video.

Adventures in Tempo

Students will discover the differences in musical tempo between fast and slow.  Students will learn to use the correct musical terms to describe the tempo of each piece of music.  Students will use streamers and their bodies to show at what tempo each piece is played.

Does the Music Add Up?

How Steep is Your Tune?

In this adventure, students will observe the effect of two factors on a motion plot. They will walk at two different speeds, walk in two different directions, and walk to the tempo of two different classical music selections. The students will then deduce how the value of the slope of a line can be "seen" in its graph.

The Nutcracker Ballet

Selecting a Musical Score for Reader's Theater

Students will practice and perform a Reader's Theater entitled Salt, a Russian folktale. They will hear a story about the Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, and listen to four of his compositions: Swan Lake, Serenade for Strings, Marche Slave, and 1812 Overture. Finally, in groups of five to eight students, they will choose a musical score from these pieces to accompany their section of the Reader's Theater.

Moving to Tchaikovsky

Students will be able to identify "same" and "different" in sections of “Trepak” from The Nutcracker by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, while learning and practicing different kinds of locomotor and non-locomotor movements. Students will work on skipping, galloping, hopping, jumping, walking, tiptoeing as well as bending, twisting, and stretching all in time with the music. Students will be able to identify when the tempo of the music gets faster.
