Pedro y El Lobo (Peter and the Wolf)

Peter and the Wolf becomes Pedro y El Lobo as students in Spanish class are given the opportunity to increase their vocabulary with an exploration into the classic musical tale by Sergei Prokofiev.  This lesson provides practice in new vocabulary and natural dialogue as the students create a new ending to the tale and perform it in front of their peers.

Movement of the Animals

Students will understand that music can interpret movement as they focus on how the movement of animals may be best represented by music.  Through their knowledge of tempo and dynamics, the instruments of the orchestra, and knowledge of the physical attributes of animals in the wild, students will create a short musical composition to interpret what they have learned about the movement of animals.

This is Tempo!

Guess What's on My Mind?

Students can use music to read each other’s minds!  As students learn to differentiate tempo and dynamics to interpret the mood of the music, they will express it through physical movement that allows their classmates to guess what is on their mind.

Beethoven's Sixth Symphony: Pastoral

Students discover how music can create a visual image in one’s mind as they listen to Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony – Pastoral.  As the image takes shape, the students create a visual representation of their image to include the aspects of nature which Beethoven included in this wonderful composition.

Animal Poetry

Using Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals as a stimulus prompt, students will generate descriptive language of several animals (with special focus on verbs), culminating in the writing of a poem about the animal of their choice.

A Carnival of Animals and Children

This lesson is designed to teach positional, directional and spatial skills, social skills, large motor skills, creative skills, and oral vocabulary using the "Aquarium" movement from Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint- Saëns. The lesson is designed specifically to teach early childhood developmentally delayed students but can the challenge can easily be increased to make it appropriate for older grades or ELL classes.

An African Safari into Creativity

In this lesson students will assign an orchestral instrument to an African animal, using characteristics which they have in common. The students will write a cinquain poem and create a poster (collage) with their African animal as the theme.

Kindergarten Carnival!

This is a series of lessons on Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns, and is the culmination of a science unit on animals. During the animal unit, students learned about the different ways animals move. As an extension to the concept of how animals move, they were introduced to the book that accompanies the music of Carnival of the Animals. Each day we read and listened to one selection from the book and CD. We discussed various musical elements such as dynamics, tempo, and orchestration.

Oiseaux exotiques (Exotic Birds)

Students will be able to identify Olivier Messiaen's Oiseaux exotiques. Students will acquire some knowledge about the composer and how he replicated real bird calls musically in this composition. Students will be able to create a drawing of their own exotic bird and describe it in great detail so that another student will be able to recreate the drawing. Students will learn the importance of accurate description in writing and following directions in drawing.

Students will pay close attention to the six traits of writing - editing our first drafts and making improvements in ideas and content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions. Students will demonstrate an understanding of general musical terminology.

A Musical Visit with Babar

This lesson will introduce students to Babar, an elephant portrayed in the children's books by Jean de Brunhof. Students will listen to Francis Poulenc's musical composition of the same name, written to reflect the scenes in Jean de Brunhof's book. Students will gain an understanding of how powerful the use of simple rhythm instruments is in retelling the story. Students will also create visual works of art based on the sounds they hear in the audio performance.
